CKB Potężnie Ciechocinek ends Legia’s winning streak

After ten consecutive wins, Legia Warsaw Boxing Club suffered its first defeat in the revived Polish Boxing League. On Friday evening, it lost 10-8 away to CKB Potężnie Ciechocinek. The standout result was home boxer Mateusz Urban’s (75 kg) victory over world silver medalist and European champion Rami Kiwan.
Legia’s defeat leaves it on 20 points and brings the race for the Polish title to life. If second-placed Military Boxing Club Rushh Kielce beats Concordia in Knurów on October 31, it will close the gap to the Warsaw team to two points. The two sides will meet in Kielce on November 22.
Legia took the lead in Ciechocinek when Nikolas Pawlik (55 kg) won a split decision over league debutant Omid Ahmadisafa of Iran. It was Pawlik’s 11th victory of the season. The visitors later led 4-2, 6-2 and 8-4. Bartłomiej Rośkowicz (65 kg), Mateusz Grejber (70 kg) and Bohdan Gorgol (80 kg) also scored points for Legia.
Potężnie fought to the end, however, and pulled off a surprise victory. Filip Mazurkiewicz won at 85 kg. At 90 kg, Mateusz Bereźnicki beat Alexey Sevostyanov 2-1, despite trailing 0-1 after the second round.
The decisive bout was the super-heavyweight contest between Paweł Wardyn and Oskar Kopera. Wardyn won 2-1 to secure victory for the Ciechocinek team.
On Saturday, Pomorzanin Boxing Team Toruń will face Imperium Boxing Wałbrzych (8:00 p.m., TVP Sport). On Sunday, RKB Wisłok 1995 Rzeszów will host Golden Team Nowy Sącz (5:00 p.m.).
