Durkacz had no chance against the Olympic tournament favorite

On the second day of the men’s Olympic boxing tournament in Tokyo, our “lone representative,” Damian Durkacz (63 kg), entered the ring. He faced a very difficult task. In the round of 32, he met one of the medal favorites, Russian Gabil Mamedov, who was competing under the Olympic flag. The 27-year-old from Orenburg has won two European Championship silver medals, in 2017 and 2019. Unfortunately, he clearly dominated in the ring and, in the opinion of all the judges, won every round against the Pole, who is five years younger.
We have now been waiting almost 13 years for a Polish boxer to win an Olympic bout. The last Polish representative to achieve this was Łukasz Maszczyk (48 kg) at the Beijing Games. In 2008, he won two bouts there, the last of them taking place on August 16 against Japhet Uutoni of Namibia. For Damian Durkacz, simply competing in Tokyo is a major achievement. Hopefully, it will pay dividends in three years at the Paris Games.
