The Suzuki Boxing Night III Olympic boxing gala was held in Lublin yesterday. The event took the form of a match between the Polish and Croatian national teams. Seven international bouts were contested, with the Polish team winning 16-2. The women won 4-0, while the men prevailed 12-2. The program was rounded out by two all-Polish bouts, held at Lublin’s Centre for the Meeting of Cultures.

It is a shame that our female and male representatives were not given the chance to test themselves against the best boxers from Croatia. Much seemed to indicate that they would be, but instead the ring featured fighters who fell short even of the broadly defined Polish elite. The victories are, of course, pleasing, all the more so because our national teams have had few opportunities to compete internationally this year. Most importantly, none of the Polish fighters disappointed coaches Karolina Michalczuk and Valery Kornilov.
