The appearances of the Polish team in today’s European qualifying tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were brief. Starting with the final bout, Mateusz Masternak (91 kg) defeated the tough Slovak David Michalek by RSC late in the first round after his opponent suffered an injury. In his next bout, the Pole will face Bulgaria’s Radoslav Pantaleyev.

The fight between Sebastian Wiktorzak (81 kg) and Estonia’s Stiven Aas ended in almost exactly the same way. Unfortunately, it was the Pole who left the ring as the loser. Wiktorzak won the first round, but paid for it with an injury and a cut above his right eye. At the start of the second round, following a medical consultation, the referee sent him back to his corner and declared the 20-year-old Estonian the winner.

Damian Durkacz (63 kg) is one step away from Olympic qualification. The Pole was scheduled to box Portugal’s Farid Walizadeh, who is of Afghan origin, but his opponent failed to appear at the weigh-in. The pupil of coach Ireneusz Przywara therefore advanced to the last 16. There, he will cross gloves with the methodical Hungarian Milan Fodor. If he defeats him, he will be able to celebrate securing his Olympic ticket.
