The 90th Polish Senior Boxing Championships began yesterday at the domEXPO arena in Opole. This year’s tournament is highly significant in the context of the fight for a place on the national team. The squad will soon face Olympic qualifiers. A total of 142 boxers from 64 clubs are taking part in the competition.

Opole is hosting not only the familiar domestic elite. There are also some surprising names among the participants. Former EBU professional European cruiserweight champion, 32-year-old Mateusz Masternak (RUSHH Kielce, 91 kg), will compete for the gold medal. The second group includes 28-year-old Paweł Kastramin (Żoliborska Szkoła Boksu, 69 kg), the former European Championships silver medalist from Samokov in 2015 and bronze medalist at the 2013 European Championships in Minsk.

The multiple-time champion and representative of Belarus, who competed at the 2015 World Championships in Doha and was an Olympian in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, showed a glimpse of his abilities yesterday. In the qualifiers, he defeated Daniel Piotrowski (CKB Potężnie Ciechocinek) comfortably on points. Kastramin will surely be one of the leading medal contenders. Today, more preliminary bouts are scheduled in the 69, 75 and 81 kg divisions.
