Mairis Briedis (25-1, 18 KOs) knocked out Krzysztof Głowacki (31-1, 19 KOs) and took his world title in the semifinal of the WBSS tournament in Riga. The fight was scandalous. It was dominated by brutal fouls, primarily from the Latvian, as well as officiating errors.

“Główka” came forward from the opening bell. After several feints and an exchange at close range, he landed a left jab to the body. He then produced a spectacular left to the head–right to the body combination before landing a powerful uppercut. Briedis responded with a straight right, while the Pole consistently looked for a long left to the body.

The beginning of the second round belonged to the aggressively fighting Głowacki. The Pole lowered his stance and applied pressure. Briedis tried to place a straight right behind his opponent’s ear. Głowacki then looked for a counterattack and follow-up punches. In the clinch, the Pole hit his opponent in the back of the head, and the Latvian responded with an elbow to the jaw. After the blow, Głowacki fell to the canvas.

Fortunately, he managed to get up. The referee warned Briedis, but after the action resumed, the Latvian charged at the Pole and sent him to the canvas again with a flurry of punches. Głowacki rose and engaged in a wild exchange that continued after the bell. The referee did not stop the action. The Pole fell to the canvas once more, this time several seconds after the end of the round. Fiodor Łapin rushed into the ring and intervened.

The third round brought another brutal exchange. Głowacki initially managed to land, but moments later he was knocked out. The fight was undoubtedly scandalous. A protest is expected to be filed immediately.
