The Red-and-Whites Outside the Medal Zone in Vladikavkaz

Poland’s representatives failed to reach the medal zone at the 4th European Under-22 Championships, which have been held in Vladikavkaz since March 8. Two of the five Red-and-Whites competed in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, both Damian Durkacz (64 kg) and Piotr Szczukowski (81 kg) lost their bouts. Durkacz suffered a split points decision defeat, 3-1, to Welshman Michael McDonagh. The bout was scored in the second round after the Polish boxer sustained an injury. Szczukowski, meanwhile, lost 0-5 to Turkey’s senior runner-up, Bayram Malkam.
The charges of coaches Ireneusz Przywara and Marek Chrobak contested seven bouts at this year’s championships. They won two and lost five. This is a result similar to last year’s campaign, when the Poles recorded three wins and seven defeats in ten bouts, with two boxers reaching the quarterfinals. Their performance was slightly better in 2017: five wins, seven defeats and three quarterfinal appearances.
