White-and-Reds lose in Kielce to Russia’s second-string team

In Kielce, cheered on by 1,400 fans, Poland’s senior national team lost 4-14 to Russia at the 6th Leszek Drogosz Memorial. The points for the White-and-Reds were scored by Damian Durkacz (64 kg) and Bartosz Gołębiewski (75 kg). The meeting was billed as a major event under the slogan “World Olympic Boxing Showdown.” In reality, however, it was a clash between an experimentally assembled Polish team and boxers from Russia’s second string.
The visitors brought to Kielce a team made up almost exclusively of boxers unknown on international rings. For most of them, the highlight of their achievements this year was reaching the quarterfinals of the Russian Championships—which meant finishing fifth to eighth—or competing in the medal stages of the Russian Army Championships.
