Ten new Polish champions. Finals of the 89th Polish Championships in Karlino
The 89th Polish Senior Boxing Championships concluded today in Karlino. Fans gathered at Homanit Arena watched ten exciting bouts. In five of them, the judges were not unanimous. The 2018 national champions, listed by weight class, are: Jakub Słomiński (KS Wda Świecie, 49 kg), Maciej Jóźwik (BKS Skorpion Szczecin, 52 kg), Jarosław Iwanow (TS Wisła Kraków, 56 kg), Radomir Obruśniak (KSW Róża Karlino, 60 kg), Damian Durkacz (KS Spartan Knurów, 64 kg), Mikołaj Tobera (KS Sporty Walki Piła, 69 kg), Bartosz Gołębiewski (KKS RUSHH Kielce, 75 kg), Arkadiusz Szwedowicz (BKS Skorpion Szczecin, 81 kg), Michał Soczyński (KS PACO Lublin, 91 kg) and Mateusz Cielepała (Unattached, +91 kg).
Only three boxers defended the titles they won last year: Słomiński, Gołębiewski and Szwedowicz. For Arkadiusz Szwedowicz, it was already his fourth consecutive gold medal at the Polish Senior Championships. Jakub Słomiński and Maciej Jóźwik became national champions among seniors for the third time.
The tournament's biggest surprise was provided by the new Polish super-heavyweight champion, Mateusz Cielepała. He is not, however, the first unattached boxer to reach the top step of the podium at the Polish Championships. In 1977, Henryk Janowski (75 kg) achieved this feat, winning gold at the 48th Polish Championships in Sosnowiec. In 1985, at the 55th Polish Championships in Wrocław, Zygmunt Gosiewski (81 kg) triumphed. In 1999, at the 70th Polish Championships in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Sławomir Malinowski (63.5 kg) was the best, while Mateusz Malujda (+91 kg) won at the 81st Championships in Strzegom.
