Durkacz Loses Final as Kazakhs and Russians Dominate the Stamma Tournament

On the final day of the 35th International Feliks Stamm Boxing Tournament, only one representative of Poland, Damian Durkacz (64 kg), competed. After three victories in Warsaw, the 19-year-old boxer from Knurów had to acknowledge the superiority of the reigning Kazakh champion, Bekdaulet Ibragimov. The judges scored the bout 4-1 in favor of his opponent.
Kazakhstan and Russia shared the gold medals, winning four each. The Philippines and Turkmenistan also had one winner apiece. In weight-class order, the winners were: Bator Sagaluyev (Russia, 49 kg), Ian Clark Bautista (Philippines, 52 kg), Ilyas Suleymenov (Kazakhstan, 56 kg), Khursant Imankuliyev (Turkmenistan, 60 kg), Bekdaulet Ibragimov (Kazakhstan, 64 kg), Aslanbek Shymbergenov (Kazakhstan, 69 kg), Gleb Bakshi (Russia, 75 kg), Georgiy Kushitashvili (Russia, 81 kg), Anton Pinchuk (Kazakhstan, 91 kg) and Magomed Omarov (Russia, +91 kg).
Almost all of the boxers listed above, apart from Sagaluyev, Bakshi and Kushitashvili, are champions of their respective countries. Their participation clearly raised the standard of this year’s competition. More than 30 reigning national champions took part in the tournament overall.
That makes it all the more disappointing that such a small group of boxers from the Polish national team and its development squad took them on.
It is known that the seven first-choice representatives who will compete at the European Under-22 Championships on March 24 were training in Germany. But where was everyone else? Credit must go to the young boxers who took on the tournament’s best competitors without an inferiority complex, often relying solely on preparation at their clubs.
It is a shame to have missed the chance to gain valuable experience. The next Feliks Stamm Tournament will not take place for another year. Hopefully, this time the event will be held at a date convenient for the boxers. It is difficult to recall a situation in which the country hosting its most important international tournament of the year, one included on the EUBC calendar, entered a second-string team.
