Poland Lost to Ukraine but Gained Valuable Experience

On Saturday (March 25), Lutsk hosted an international match between the youth national teams of Poland and Ukraine. The hosts won 13–7, but as many as three bouts ended in draws. For the White and Reds, junior Jakub Dordzik (54 kg) and youth boxer Damian Durkacz (60 kg) won their bouts. Eryk Apresyan (69 kg), Konrad Kaczmarkiewicz (81 kg) and Oskar Safarian (+91 kg) recorded draws.
Damian Durkacz deserves particular praise. The Pole defeated last year’s Ukrainian youth champion, Maksim Boryghpolets. Oskar Safarian, meanwhile, drew with another Ukrainian champion and the bronze medalist from the 2016 European Youth Championships in Anapa, Dmitro Galagan.
For the team coached by Jarosław Przygoda, this was a valuable test, especially since the Ukrainians fielded a strong lineup. Their squad included national champions Taras Bondarchuk (56 kg) and the aforementioned Boryghpolets, as well as runner-up Dmitro Sambura (64 kg). The lineup also featured bronze medalists Yakiv Levchuk (75 kg) and Ivan Papakin (75 kg), the 2015 European junior champion from Lviv.
