Mateusz Masternak (34-2, 24 KO) had to contend with the referee and one of the judges. Nevertheless, he delivered his best boxing in a long time and defeated former two-time world champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (37-6, 23 KO).

The Frenchman immediately went on the attack in his usual style, but Mateusz stopped him with his jab. He cleverly countered with the right cross or right uppercut. In the second round, the Pole was more active. This time, he built his lead with the right jab—a narrow advantage, but enough to give him a 20:18 lead after two rounds. “Master” dominated for two and a half minutes of the third. Furious, Mormeck tried to respond with wide hooks. He missed until finally landing with a left, following up with a right, and suddenly things got heated. Fortunately, Masternak answered with a powerful right cross right on the bell. In the fourth round, the former king of the division charged forward furiously and genuinely dominated the Wrocław native. Masternak finished the round better, however.

The fifth round belonged to our compatriot. He beat the home fighter to the punch and used his activity to prevent him from getting into his rhythm. In the sixth, Mormeck set about making up the deficit. He landed two clean right hands, but it was Mateusz who forced him onto the defensive. The next three minutes unfolded in much the same way. Concern arose at the start of the eighth round. The Frenchman began to find his voice, but then Masternak fired off a right-hand counter against Mormeck’s right. Mormeck’s legs buckled. The Pole moved in and landed several more shots, but could not finish off his hurt opponent. The ninth round followed a similar pattern. This time, the referee came to the Frenchman’s aid by asking for his bandage binding to be corrected. Mateusz’s advantage nevertheless remained very clear.

The final three minutes again belonged to Masternak. Mormeck once more found himself on the verge of a knockout, but managed to escape the danger. He threw a wide right, landed to the head, and stopped “Master” for several good seconds. The situation quickly returned to normal, however. Mateusz held the advantage until the final bell. To everyone’s surprise, the judges scored the fight a majority decision. It is frightening to think what might have happened had Masternak not dominated the final three rounds so clearly…
