Despite their determined performances in the quarterfinals, Damian Durkacz (48 kg) and Filip Foryś (+80 kg) will return home from the 18th European Junior Championships (formerly the Cadet Championships) without medals.

Durkacz, who boxes for Gardia Gierałtowice, lost unanimously on points (0-3) to Hungary’s Gabor Virban. Judges from England, Moldova and Turkey were in agreement, scoring the bout 29-28. Foryś, a product of Skorpion Szczecin, was controversially declared defeated (1-2) in his bout against Lithuania’s Robertas Jokulys. The judge from Moldova awarded Filip all three rounds (30-27), but the other two officials, from Russia and Israel, scored in favor of his opponent (29-28).

As a result, Poland’s six-member team, led in Anapa by coaches Karol Chabros and Marcin Gruchała, will return home without a medal. This is the third consecutive European Championships tournament in this age category, following the events in Sofia in 2012 and Anapa in 2013, in which the White and Reds have failed to reach the podium. Poland’s most recent medalist was the late Paweł Polski, the European runner-up in the 52 kg division in 2011. The event was held in Keszthely, with Zbigniew Raubo, the current coach of Poland’s senior national team, in the corner of the boxer from Karlino.
